Hello from PS 437Q — A weekly update for families — February 2, 2026
Welcome back!
In my last update, I shared that our starting point at PS 437Q is making sure children feel safe, supported, and excited to come to school each day. This week, I want to share a bit about how learning will work once that foundation is in place.
In kindergarten, learning doesn’t happen all at once and it doesn’t always look the way adults remember school. Children learn best when skills are taught clearly and then used in meaningful ways. That balance is at the heart of how we’re designing learning at PS 437Q.
Children will spend time building foundational skills - listening and talking about ideas, working with numbers, learning letter sounds, and expressing their thinking through drawing and early writing. These skills matter, and they will be taught intentionally and carefully.
Children will also use those skills through projects, hands-on experiences, meaningful conversations, and field trips that help learning feel connected to the world around them. They might work together to investigate a question, build something, or explore their community using what they’re learning in real ways.
Over time, families will see growth in many forms: in how children explain their thinking, in the detail and confidence in their drawings and writing, in their comfort working with numbers, and in their ability to talk about what they’re learning and why it matters.
In future updates, I’ll share more about what a kindergarten day will look like from start to finish, how projects fit alongside daily learning, and how families can support children as they get ready for school.
In the meantime, if you have questions, you can reach me at ps437q@schools.nyc.gov, and you can follow along on Instagram at @ps437q.
Warmly,
Suzanne Sheerin
