A weekly update for families — March 23, 2026
As we design West Q, one idea keeps guiding many of our decisions: children learn best when they feel safe. Not just physically safe, but safe enough to settle in - to take risks, ask questions, and try things that might feel difficult at first.
For many of our kindergarten students, this fall will be their very first experience with school. Those early days matter more than we sometimes realize. When classrooms feel calm, predictable, and welcoming, children are able to focus their energy on learning instead of worrying about what comes next.
That’s why we’re thinking carefully about the small things that shape a child’s day: consistent routines, warm relationships with teachers, and classrooms where students know what to expect.
When children feel secure, something wonderful happens. Curiosity takes over. They begin asking questions, sharing ideas, and discovering what they are capable of. Creating that kind of beginning for children is one of the most important things we hope to do at West Q.
If you ever have questions, you are always welcome to reach out at ps437q@schools.nyc.gov or follow us on IG: @west_q_elementary to stay connected.
Warmly,
Suzanne Sheerin
