A weekly update for families — April 06, 2026

The first person a child looks for when they walk into a classroom each morning is their teacher.

A great teacher does so much more than deliver a lesson. They notice when a student is stuck and know just what to say. They help children stay with a problem a little longer. They build classrooms where students feel known, supported, and capable.

Programs and materials can support that work, but they can’t replace it.

That’s why one of the most important parts of opening a new school is building the right team of educators. As we begin hiring this spring, I’ll be looking carefully for teachers who are thoughtful about their craft, who care deeply about their students, and who believe in the kind of learning we’re building at West Q. Finding the right fit matters far more than moving quickly.

Because in the end, it’s the people in the building who shape what children experience every day. That’s why we’re taking such care to find the teachers who will be waiting at that classroom door.

If you ever have questions, you’re always welcome to reach out at westqelementary@schools.nyc.gov or follow along on Instagram @west_q_elementary.

Warmly,

Suzanne Sheerin

I.A. Founding Principal, West Q Elementary
