A weekly update for families — April 20, 2026

The first person a child looks for when they walk into a classroom each morning is their teacher.

A great teacher does much more than deliver a lesson. They notice when a student is stuck and ask the right question. They help children stay with a problem a little longer. They build classrooms where students feel known, supported, and capable.
Programs and materials can support that work, but they can’t replace it.

That’s why one of the most important parts of opening a new school is building the right team of educators. As we begin the hiring process this spring, I’ll be looking carefully for teachers who are thoughtful about their craft, who care deeply about their students, and who believe in the kind of learning we’re designing at West Q. Finding the right fit matters far more than moving quickly.

Because in the end, it’s the people in the building who shape the experience children carry with them every day. That’s why we’re taking great care to find the teachers who will be waiting at that classroom door.

If you ever have questions, you are always welcome to reach out at ps437q@schools.nyc.gov or follow us on IG: @west_q_elementary to stay connected.

Warmly,
Suzanne Sheerin
I.A. Founding Principal, West Q Elementary
