A weekly update for families — March 2, 2026
Play is serious work in kindergarten.
When children play, they are not stepping away from learning - they are stepping into it. Through play, children talk, imagine, build, solve problems, and learn how to work with others. They test ideas. They try again. They figure things out together.
At West Q Elementary, play will be part of the rhythm of the day. Children might build with blocks while exploring number ideas, act out a story they’ve read, or work together to create something connected to a class project. These moments help children grow in ways that worksheets simply can’t.
Kindergarten should feel joyful, active, and full of discovery. At the same time, children will be building strong foundational skills in reading, writing, and math. Those two things - skill-building and exploration - belong together.
When children feel safe and excited about coming to school, they’re more willing to take risks, ask questions, and share their ideas. That’s the kind of learning environment we’re working to create from the very beginning.
I’m looking forward to building that experience with you and your children.
