A weekly update for families — May 11, 2026
This week, NYCPS Chancellor Kamar Samuels announced five new schools opening this fall - and West Q Elementary is proud to be one of them.
Part of the vision behind this school is giving families more choice. Unlike most schools, West Q is not tied to a zone, which means families from anywhere in NYC can apply.
Over the past year, we’ve been designing the school from the ground up, thinking carefully about what school should feel like for young children.
This September, that work takes shape as we open with 3K, Pre-K, and Kindergarten.
For many children, this will be their first experience with school. We’ve been planning for that: what the first days look like, how children get comfortable, and how they begin to understand their day.
And for families, you won’t be figuring it out on your own. You’ll hear from us before school starts, have opportunities to ask questions, and know what to expect going into the first day.
We’ll begin that in June with a Founding Families Meet & Greet on Zoom, where I’ll walk through the start of the year and answer questions directly.
If you’ve already accepted your child’s seat, this will help you feel more prepared for September. If you’re still deciding, it’s a chance to learn more about the school before making your decision.
If you’ve received a kindergarten offer, log into MySchools to accept your seat.
If you’re still exploring options, you can add your child to the West Q Elementary/PS 437 waitlist. I’ll reach out as seats become available.
If you have questions, feel free to reach out - I’m happy to connect :)
Warmly,
Suzanne Sheerin
